1. Download the Windows ISO

Older versions don’t let you use Windows 7 or 8 keys to activate it directly.
Don’t worry about “K”, “N”, “KN”, “Simple Language” or other suffixes. Just download the plain Windows 10. Those suffixes are for lighter versions of Windows made for Europe and South Korea, due to anti-trust litigation against Microsoft.

Once you have downloaded the ISO, keep it in a location you can easily find later, like your desktop or downloads folder.

2. Plug in Your USB Drive

Disconnect any other USB hard drive, optical drive, or other storage media you have connected.

3. Start Boot Camp Assistant

Mac OS X’s built-in Boot Camp Assistant (BCA) is capable of creating the bootable Windows 10 installer USB drive, so you don’t need any third-party apps.

Click Continue at the introduction dialog box.

4. Configure Boot Camp

Check the box for “Create a Windows 7 or later install disk”.

The other options will probably be greyed out, but in case they aren’t, check the second box for “Download the latest Windows support software from Apple”, and don’t check the third box.

Click Continue when done.

5. Choose Your ISO Image & USB Drive

Browse to and select the Windows 10 ISO file you downloaded.

In Destination Disk, make sure you see your 8GB USB drive.

Click Continue when done.

6. Copy The Image to Disk

BCA will format this USB drive, so again, make sure it has no important data on it that you can’t lose.

All the data will be wiped.Click Continue to proceed. The installation process will now start and you don’t need to interact at all. Just let it run.

If you’re on a MacBook, don’t shut the MacBook’s lid! It’s an instinctive act that several of us do when we aren’t using the laptop, but this will put your Mac to sleep and interrupt the process.

When everything is done, you’ll see a window that says “The Windows support software has been saved.”

Click Quit to finish your procedure, unmount and unplug your USB drive. Congratulations! This is now a bootable Windows 10 installer.

While Booting: USB vs. UEFI

When you go to install Windows 10 on a PC with this USB drive, your motherboard might not boot with it, even if you have set to boot with the USB first. It’s a common problem with a simple solution.

Choose UEFI instead of USB Mass Storage. Save the new settings, exit BIOS, and restart. This time, your computer should boot into your Windows 10 installer USB drive.

Alternate Method to Create the Installer

The Boot Camp Assistant is the easiest way to make a bootable USB installer for Windows 10, but some users have reported problems with it. This method will usually not use UEFI firmware, so the BIOS settings change won’t be needed.

You can also just mount the ISO, format the USB as FAT with MBR and just drag and drop the files from the ISO to the USB. It boots fine with EFI :-)

I have a SanDisk Cruser drive that was formatted for a Mac and now I want to use it for a PC (and I don't have access to the Mac. What can I do?

Assuming Vista or 7 (this should work on XP, 8, 8.1, and 10, as well) and that the disk is not showing up under My Computer at all:

Connect your disk.
Run cmd as an Administrator.
Run diskpart.exe. Use ? if you need help in this program.
list disk
Find the disk that corresponds to your USB disk. select disk n where n is the number of the disk. Confirm that you're using the right disk with detail disk.
clean(Warning: This command erases the disk's partition information. Any data on the disk will no longer be accessible.)
create partition primary. No size is needed if you want to use the whole disk
active. Optional. Marks the partition as potentially bootable.
format fs=fat32 quick. You can choose NTFS or exFAT instead of FAT32 if you want. (Note: Windows 10 limits FAT32 to 4GB. I recommend using exFAT instead, which is essentially a newer version of the same format.)
assign. Assigns the disk a drive letter.
exit to quit.

If you're still having problems with the disk after trying this, you might try omitting the quick from step 9 to do a full format. That will take a very long time and usually isn't necessary, but may help uncover physical damage to the disk.

In some cases you might need to re-initialize the disk. As above, this will destroy the data on the disk (or, rather, your ability to access it). To do that from diskpart.exe:

list disk
select disk n
attributes disk clear readonly. This command will unset the read-only flag on the disk. You can see the current attributes with attributes disk or detail disk.
online disk. Sets the device status to online if it's been disabled.
convert mbr. Converts the disk to MBR format, which will work just fine for most disks. If you've got a USB disk larger than 2 terabytes, however, you'll want to use convert gpt instead.

I'm not sure if the above commands are all identical on older OSs (XP).

Trying the other top answer, I received a 'Windows was unable to complete the format' error. So for anyone getting the same, I found another solution.

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'.
Under 'Storage' select 'Disk Management'.
In the lower right hand window, you should see the drive you're trying to format.
Right click on the volume and select the 'Simple Volume Wizard'.
Pick the format there and the wizard formats the disk without errors.

(On Windows 7) right click My Computer → Manage → Disk Management (under Storage).Identify your disk in the list, then right click on the volume and choose 'Format', then choose your preferred file system.

I had to delete previous volumes on that disk before I could do it - note that all data will be lost, so make sure you have backup or that you don't need it!
