Does anyone know why on earth I keep getting this notification when I try to restore my iPhone from a backup (from my computer)?

iTunes could not restore the iPhone 'iPhone' because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored.

Whenever I back up my iPhone, it seems to be backing up correctly, yet when I try to restore it, this error occurs.

I also occasionally get:

iTunes could not restore the iPhone 'iPhone' because the backup session failed.

So, two questions:

  1. Is there any way to 'uncorrupt' these backups so I can actually restore my iPhone?

  2. Why are they corrupted? How can I resolve this issue?

I'm running iOS 8.1 and the backups were made while running 8.1. I'm also running Yosemite.

I don't use iCloud backups because my Internet is slow as molasses.
